Etymology:

Derived from Tecoma and ella, suffix added to noun stems to form diminutives e.g. T. undulata.

Botanical name:

 

Tecomella undulata (Sm.) Seem. (Tecoma undulata  D.Don)

Local/Trade Names:

Teak of Marwar, Rodida, Rohida.

Conservation status:

A rare tree. Cultivated in the gardens of Delhi.

Digonestic features:

Flowers orange-yellow.

Description:

A medium sized tree. Leaves 5-12 x 1.5-2.5 cm, oblong, apex obuse, margin undulata. Flowers orange-yellow, arranged in racemose manner. Fruit a capsule, 15-35 cm long.

Phenology:

Fls.: April-May.

Distribution:

India. Arabia, Pakistan (Baluchistan, Sind).

Where to see it:

Ornamental Flowering Section and Medicinal Plant Garden.

Uses:

Wood used for furniture, carvings, and agricultural implements; resistant to fungus and termite attack, contains lapachol. Leaves readily eaten by cattle.
